E48: Domestic Violence Month

Trigger Warning for this week’s episode focusing on domestic violence and the question I am asked the most by students, “What do I do if I think my friend is an abusive relationship?” Check out the episode here.

As a relational communication teacher, Alysa is often asked by students what they should do if they believe their friend is in an abusive relationship. So, to build awareness during Domestic Violence Month, Alysa sits down with, Brooke, Director of Central Michigan University’s Sexual Aggression Services, to learn more about domestic violence and what friends and loved ones may expect if someone they love is being abused. E44: Infected

Check out the new episode with Lance Bennett where we chat about emotional contagion.

Have you ever been in a joyful mood, but it completely changed by the emotions your friends were experiencing? Simply put, do you consider how your emotion impacts other people and how other’s emotions impact you? Lance Bennett, from the University of Iowa, is back to chat with Alysa about his research on emotional contagion and how it relates to relationships, like friendships. The lively, yet nerdy discussion focuses on Lance’s plan for research and Alysa asking questions and providing scenarios for Lance to tackle! Because emotional contagion is an infection that is unlikely to go away, it is critical to consider the role of emotion in our friendships and how being infected with such emotion can impact our well-being.    ESPN Video about Iowa Wave =  https://youtu.be/w7UqYD_owgY Share Your Friendship Stories with Alysa! E42: Success Squad

Check out the new episode of Best Forevers focusing on BACK TO SCHOOL, and how to make connections as you start college.

Get your pencils, calculators, textbooks, and…friends? Yes, it’s back to school time and, for many young people, they’ll be heading to college as first year students, returning students, or transfer students. However, loneliness and concern about making friends is a critical issue so Alysa chats with Ellen Wehrman, the Assistant Director of Central Michigan University’s Sarah R. Opperman Leadership Institute, about the considerations young people should make as they set foot on campus and make new connections. Not only will this episode help students start their new life transition, but it’s directly applicable to ANYONE who experiences life transitions from moving, new jobs, and being part of a retirement community. So, have a listen, take some notes, and put yourself out there to find your success squad! Share Your Friendship Stories with Alysa! E41: Best Forevers Book Club - Girl, You Lack Decorum

Here's the most recent Best Forevers Book Club episodes, Girl, You Lack Decorum, where Claire and I talk about a fave book series from my childhood, The Babysitter's Club.

In the third installment of the Best Forevers Book Club, Alysa makes Claire read another book from her childhood and, this time, it’s all about clean scandal and lack of decorum! We discuss Ann M. Martin’s best-selling series,  The Babysitter’s Club , with a dive into the first book,  Kristy’s Great Idea . Clubs may help bring friends together, but how do you power through and maintain friendships when there’s conflict, puberty and hormones, potential liars, and witches that live next door to the kids you’re babysitting? Although these are the type of books most parents would want their children to read, Alysa and Claire explore issues this book could’ve covered to help young people navigate their friendships at such a sensitive age. So, show some decorum and come join the club! Share Your Friendship Stories with Alysa!
